Cleansing Practices of Classical Hatha Yoga: Unlocking the Flow of Prana

  • North Rocks Guide Hall, Baden Powell Place (end of the Cul-de-Sac) North Rocks NSW 2151 Australia (map)

Shatkarma & Pranayama Workshop

Ancient hatha yoga texts, such as the Gheranda Samhita, recommend beginning Pranayama practice during the transition of seasons - winter to spring and summer to autumn - as these seasonal shifts often trigger allergies, congestion of kapha (mucus) , and the onset of ailments such as colds, fevers, and digestive imbalances.

Before we begin Pranayama, it is essential to first prepare the body by cleansing the toxins and balancing the three doshas: kapha (mucus), pitta (bile), and vata (wind) which, when disturbed, create disharmony across physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. On a spiritual plane, purification opens the nadis (energy channels), allowing the free flow of prana (life force).

Learn traditional purification techniques recommended during seasonal transitions in classical texts. This workshop introduces you to two of the Shatkarmas (yogic cleansing practices) and one foundational Pranayama, designed especially for intermediate practitioners and yoga teachers wishing to deepen their knowledge of Hatha Yoga beyond the mat.

Kapalabhati – Though often mistaken for a pranayama, this powerful cleansing technique purifies the frontal lobe and eliminates mucus-related disorders

Jala Neti – A nasal cleansing practice that clears the respiratory passages, improving breath flow and overall health.

Nadi Shodhana Pranayama – Also known as alternate nostril breathing, this practice balances the flow of prana, calms the mind, and harmonises the nervous system.

Through guided instruction and hands-on practice, participants will not only learn the techniques but also understand their physiological, energetic, and spiritual benefits. This direct experience provides insights that cannot be fully captured through books or theory alone. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to engage with the cleansing practices of classical Hatha Yoga.

Fee: $75/- Ceramic Neti pot will be provided. Purchase for $20.
